The objective of installing a modified torque converter is to match the flash stall (the r.p.m. that the converter flashes to under full throttle acceleration from a dead stop and holds
at until the driveline reaches that speed) with the designed operating range of the engine. Accomplishing this
goal provides maximum engine output and efficiency.
The operating powerband of the engine is determined by the camshaft design, fuel system size and design (eg: carburation,
fuel injection, supercharging, etc.),manifold design, cylinder head design, engine stroke and displacement. The converter
must be designed to operate within this range. SELECTING THE CORRECT FLASH STALL FOR THE APPLICATION IS CRITICAL IN OBTAINING MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR VEHICLE.
RACE ONLY APPLICATIONS- Check out our section
on Race only converters to determine the correct converter for your application.
Improper converter selection or poorly designed converters will result
in poor performance and driveability. Extremely high stall speed and inferior designs can lead to
heat generating, power robbing excess slippage, r.p.m. flair up, lost m.p.h., decreased mileage and all around
poor driveablity.
SMR TORQUE CONVERTERS are designed to provide the flash stall most suited to the torqueband of the
engine WITHOUT EXCESS SLIPPAGE throughout the power range. By reducing slippage after the launch, more
of the torque can be utilized to power the vehicle. This design results in more miles per hour
without r.p.m. increase, reducing heat and engine wear. This design makes the SMR 10
3/4" ProSportsman (3000) and in most applications, even the SMR 9 1/2" ProSportsman (4000)
flash stall converters, very streetable without the light throttle flair up encountered with other brands
.
Under normal driving conditions, around town and on the highway, The SMR converter
operates like a stock torque converter.
When the accelerator is floored, from a dead stop, without applying
the brakes, the converter flashes to its' designed r.p.m. pauses at this r.p.m. point while
multiplying torque until the drivetrain reaches this speed and then the r.p.m. increases as it would with a stock converter.
A HIGHER FLASH STALL PROVIDES TORQUE MULTIPLICATION FOR A GREATER PERIOD OF RANGE WITH IN THE POWERBAND.
IN ORDER TO WITHSTAND THE PUNISHMENT OF HEAVY DUTY, HIGH PERFORMANCE or COMPETITION USE,
SMR CONVERTERS ALSO RECEIVE EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS TO INTERNAL COMPONENTS AND CRITICAL DETAIL TO PRECISE SPECIFICATIONS.
